Car valeting vs detailing: what is the difference?

A valet is a thorough clean of the car inside and out. Detailing goes further, removing contamination and swirl marks from the paint and protecting it, and takes much longer.

Key points
  • A mini valet is a quick wash and tidy, a full valet is a deep clean inside and out.
  • Detailing focuses on the condition of the paint: decontamination, polishing and protection.
  • Paint correction removes or reduces swirls and light scratches by machine polishing the clear coat.
  • A ceramic coating is a hard protective layer that only lasts as well as the prep underneath it.
  • Wash water with detergent should not run into street drains, which usually lead straight to rivers and streams.

The short answer

Valeting is about making the car clean. Detailing is about making the car look its best and keeping it that way. A valet will leave the paint washed and the interior spotless. A detail will also deal with what washing cannot shift: bonded dirt, tar, fine scratches and dull paint.

The words overlap, and some businesses use them loosely. The best way to compare is to ask exactly what steps are included and how long the job will take. A full detail on a neglected car can take a day or more.

What is a mini valet?

A mini valet is a maintenance clean. It suits a car that is looked after regularly and just needs freshening up, often every few weeks.

  • Hand wash and dry of the bodywork
  • Wheels and tyres cleaned, tyres dressed
  • Windows cleaned inside and out
  • Interior hoovered, including mats
  • Dashboard and door panels wiped down

What is a full valet?

A full valet takes longer and goes deeper, especially inside. It is a good choice before selling a car, at the end of a lease, after a long winter or if the car has been used to carry children, pets or work kit.

  • Everything in a mini valet, with a more thorough pre-wash and wheel clean
  • Seats and carpets shampooed or steam cleaned, stains treated
  • Leather cleaned and conditioned
  • Door shuts, vents, seat rails and cup holders cleaned
  • Boot emptied and cleaned
  • A wax or quick sealant on the paint for short-term shine

What does detailing involve?

Detailing starts with a careful wash designed not to add scratches, often using snow foam and the two bucket method. Then the paint is decontaminated. An iron remover dissolves brake dust and metal fallout, a tar remover lifts road tar, and a clay bar pulls out bonded grit that makes the paint feel rough.

After that the detailer inspects the paint under strong light and decides what it needs. That could be a single polish to bring back gloss, or full paint correction. The job finishes with protection: a wax, a sealant or a ceramic coating. Interior detailing can include deep cleaning, leather care and odour treatment.

Paint correction and ceramic coatings explained

Paint correction means machine polishing the clear coat to level out swirl marks, holograms and light scratches. A one-stage polish improves gloss and removes some defects. A multi-stage correction uses a cutting compound first and then a finer polish, and removes more. A good detailer measures paint thickness, because the clear coat is thin and can only be polished so many times.

If you can catch a scratch with your fingernail, or it shows primer or bare metal, polishing will not fully remove it and it may need a bodyshop.

A ceramic coating is a liquid that bonds to the paint and hardens into a protective layer. It makes the car easier to wash, resists dirt and adds gloss. It does not make the paint scratch-proof, and any swirls left underneath are sealed in, which is why correction usually comes first. How long it lasts depends on the product, the prep and how you wash the car afterwards.

How often should you valet or detail a car?

There is no fixed rule, as it depends on how you use the car and where you park it. A common pattern is a maintenance wash every couple of weeks, a full valet a few times a year and a detail when the paint looks tired or before you add long-term protection.

Cars parked under trees, near the coast or on busy roads pick up contamination faster. Bird droppings and tree sap are worth removing quickly, as they can etch the clear coat if left in the sun.

A note on water and run-off

Most street drains carry surface water, which usually flows straight into local rivers and streams without treatment. Government pollution guidance says water containing detergent, for example from car washing, should not go into surface water drains. A careful mobile detailer will think about where the water goes, use biodegradable products and keep run-off to a minimum.

Some detailers use rinseless or waterless washes for lightly dirty cars, which use very little water. During a hosepipe ban, check with your water company what is allowed and ask the detailer how they work.

How AYS can help

On AYS Concierge you enter your postcode and see mobile valeters and detailers who cover your area. A standard valet often has a fixed price shown before you book, while paint correction and coatings are usually quoted, and quotes are free with no obligation. Photos of the paint and interior help the pro give an accurate quote.

Questions people also ask

Is detailing worth it on an older car?

Often, yes. Older paint is usually dull because of swirls and contamination rather than wear, and a decontamination and polish can make a real difference. It can also help when selling, as buyers judge condition by how the car looks. Ask the detailer to check paint thickness and damage first, so they can tell you what is realistic.

How long does a full valet take?

It depends on the size of the car and how dirty it is. A full valet on a typical family car usually takes a few hours. Heavy pet hair, sand, smoke smells or stained seats add time, as does drying fabric seats properly. Mention any of these when you book so the valeter can plan the day.

Can I take a car through an automatic car wash after a ceramic coating?

Most detailers advise against it, especially washes with brushes, as they can add swirls to the paint and the coating will not stop them. Hand washing with a pH neutral shampoo and clean mitts keeps a coating performing for longer. Your detailer should give you aftercare instructions for the product they used.

Does a mobile valeter need water and power from my house?

Some do and some do not. Many mobile valeters carry their own water tank and power, so they can work on a street or in a car park. Others are happy to use an outside tap and socket. Say what you have when you book, and the valeter will tell you what they need.
