Dog training

What to expect
from your pro.

Most dog problems show up in real places. Pulling on the pavement, jumping up at visitors, ignoring you in the park, barking at the window. Dog training at home or on your usual walk means the trainer sees exactly what happens and helps you practise in the spot where it matters.

On AYS you enter your postcode and see dog trainers who cover your area. For a standard session, such as a puppy starter visit, you may see a fixed price. For behaviour that needs a closer look, describe what is happening, how long it has been going on and when it is worst, and local trainers can send you a quote. A good trainer will ask questions first and give you clear steps to practise between sessions.

Ask any trainer how they teach. Many use reward-based methods, building good habits with treats, toys and praise. Electric shock collars are banned in Wales, and many vets and trainers advise against them. If a dog has sudden behaviour changes, a vet check is a sensible first step, as pain can be the cause.

Pricing

How the price
is worked out

Single sessions for common goals, like puppy basics or lead walking, can be booked at a fixed price shown before you pay. For behaviour problems or a course of sessions, describe your dog and local trainers send a quote. The price depends on the length of each session, how many sessions are needed, whether it is at home or out on walks, how complex the behaviour is, and any written plan or follow-up support included. Quotes are free and there is no obligation.

Before the visit

How to get
ready

  • Write down what your dog does, when it happens and what you have already tried.
  • Have your dog's usual lead, harness and some small, tasty treats ready.
  • Make sure everyone who handles the dog can join, so the whole household learns the same cues.
  • Do not tire your dog out with a long walk just before the session.
  • Mention any health problems or recent changes in behaviour, and talk to your vet if they are new.

Choosing the right pro

Every dog trainer on AYS passes a photo ID check and a review by our team before they can take bookings. Trainers can upload insurance, qualifications and membership of training bodies, which our team checks before they appear on the profile. Ask how they train, what equipment they use, and how they would handle your dog's particular problem. A good trainer explains their methods clearly.

FAQs

Dog training:
your questions.

Something else? Ask us and a person will reply.

Is training at home better than a class?

It depends on your dog. Home training suits puppies, nervous dogs and problems that happen in a particular place, such as pulling on your street or barking at the door. Classes can help with focus around other dogs. Many owners start with a home visit to get a plan, then practise on everyday walks.

How many sessions will my dog need?

Simple goals like puppy basics may only need one or two sessions plus practice. Recall, lead walking and reactivity usually take longer, because new habits are built over weeks. A trainer can give a better idea after meeting your dog. Most of the progress comes from the short practice you do between sessions.

Are electric shock collars legal in the UK?

Electric shock collars have been banned for cats and dogs in Wales since 2010. Elsewhere in the UK they are not banned at the time of writing, but the rules are under review, so check the current position where you live. Many vets and trainers advise against using them. Ask any trainer what equipment they use before you book.

What age can a puppy start training?

Puppies can start learning simple things like their name, sit and settling as soon as they come home. Short, fun sessions work best. Your vet will advise when your puppy can safely walk in public places after vaccinations, and a trainer can work at home and in the garden before then.

Can a trainer help with an aggressive dog?

Many trainers work with dogs who growl, snap or lunge, but be open about what happens so they can tell you whether it suits their experience. Some cases need a qualified behaviourist working alongside your vet. Mention any bites in your request, and keep your dog safely managed until you have advice.

Where does the session take place?

Usually at your home, on your regular walking route or in a local park, whichever suits the goal. Recall is often practised in an open space, while barking and settling are worked on at home. Your address is only shared with the trainer once the booking is confirmed, and you can agree a meeting point.
