Local gardeners,
garden back in shape.
Regular mowing, a hedge that has got away from you, or a garden that needs clearing from scratch. Find a local gardener who covers your postcode.
What to expect
from your pro.
Gardens change with the seasons, and so does the work. Spring is about the first cut and tidying beds, summer is mowing and hedges, autumn is leaves and cutting back. A good gardener knows what to do when, and what to leave alone, like a hedge with birds nesting in it or a plant that has not flowered yet.
On AYS you can book a standard visit, like a lawn cut or hedge trim, at a fixed price shown before you pay. For clearances, overgrown gardens or regular maintenance, describe the garden and local gardeners send a quote. Photos of the whole garden, the size of the lawn and the height of hedges help them price fairly.
Ask about green waste before the visit. Some gardeners take it away, which can be part of the price, and some leave it bagged for your garden waste bin. Anyone taking waste away as a business should be registered to carry waste, so it is reasonable to ask. Tell them too if you have pets, a pond or plants you want kept.

How the price
is worked out
Standard visits, like a lawn cut or hedge trim, can be booked at a fixed price shown upfront. Clearances and regular maintenance are usually quoted. What changes the price: the size of the garden, how overgrown it is, hedge height and length, access to the back garden, whether green waste is taken away, and how often you want visits. Quotes are free with no obligation.
How to get
ready
- Take photos of the whole garden and note roughly how big the lawn is.
- Leave the side gate open, or tell the gardener how to get round the back.
- Move toys, furniture and anything fragile off the lawn.
- Point out plants you want kept, so nothing precious is cut back by mistake.
- Check whether you have a garden waste bin and whether it has space.
Choosing the right pro
Every gardener on AYS passes a photo ID check and a review by our team before they can take bookings. Gardeners can upload insurance and qualifications, which we check and show on their profile. If your gardener will be taking waste away, ask whether they are registered to carry waste.
Can hedges be cut during bird nesting season?
Wild birds, their eggs and active nests are protected by law, so it is an offence to damage or destroy an active nest. Many gardeners avoid heavy hedge cutting in spring and summer when birds are most likely to be nesting. A gardener should check a hedge carefully before cutting and leave any section with an active nest.
How often should my lawn be mowed?
During the main growing season, roughly spring to early autumn, many lawns need cutting every week or two. Growth slows in cooler months and the lawn may only need an occasional tidy. Cutting too short in hot, dry weather stresses the grass, so a gardener may raise the blade in summer.
Will the gardener take the green waste away?
Some do and some leave it bagged for your garden waste bin or compost. Taking waste away costs the gardener time and disposal fees, so it may affect the price. Say what you want in your request. If they take it away, it is fair to ask if they are registered to carry waste.
What is included in a garden clearance?
A garden clearance usually means cutting back overgrowth, removing brambles and weeds, clearing rubbish and green waste, and leaving the garden tidy. It does not normally include landscaping, tree felling or removing hard materials like rubble unless agreed. Describe what is there and add photos so quotes match the job.
Can I book a regular gardener?
Yes. Many customers book weekly, fortnightly or monthly visits, especially through the growing season. Regular visits keep the garden under control and are often easier to price than occasional big tidies. You can describe what you want each visit to cover when you request quotes.
Do I need to be at home while the gardener works?
Not always. If the gardener can get into the garden through a side gate and does not need power or water from the house, many customers are happy to be out. Agree access in advance and tell them about pets, locked gates or anything they should avoid.
