Laptop repairs,
without the guesswork.
From a cracked screen to a laptop that takes ten minutes to start, find a local repairer who covers your postcode and see the price before you book.
What to expect
from your pro.
Most laptop problems fall into a few groups. Something physical breaks, like a screen, a hinge or a charging port. Something wears out, like the battery or the keyboard. Or the laptop still works but has become slow, noisy or full of pop-ups. A good repairer will tell you which it is and whether the laptop is worth fixing.
Before any laptop repair, back up your files. Copy photos, documents and anything you cannot replace to an external drive or a cloud account. Most repairs leave your data alone, but some, such as replacing a failed drive or reinstalling the system, can wipe it. If the laptop will not start, say so in your request.
On AYS you describe the fault, add the make and model, usually printed on a sticker underneath, and local pros can offer a fixed price or send a quote. When a battery or a whole laptop has reached the end of its life, ask how it will be disposed of. Electricals and batteries should not go in the household bin.

How the price
is worked out
Common jobs such as a battery or screen swap on a known model can be booked at a fixed price shown before you pay. Faults that need diagnosing, such as power problems, liquid damage or data recovery, are quoted. The price depends on the make and model, the cost and availability of the part, how hard the laptop is to open, and how much time the fault takes to find. Quotes are free and there is no obligation.
How to get
ready
- Back up your files to an external drive or cloud account before the repair, if the laptop still starts.
- Note the make and model from the sticker underneath and add a photo of the fault to your request.
- Decide whether to share your password, or set up a separate guest account for the repairer.
- Bring or leave out the charger, as many faults are tested with it plugged in.
- Write down when the problem started and anything that happened just before, such as a drop or a spill.
Choosing the right pro
Every repairer on AYS passes a photo ID check and a review by our team before they can take bookings. We ask repairers for insurance and any training or qualifications, and pros can show these on their profile. Your laptop may hold private files, so ask how they handle data and passwords, and whether replaced parts and old batteries go for proper recycling.
Should I back up my laptop before a repair?
Yes, if it still starts. Copy anything you cannot replace, such as photos, documents and saved passwords, to an external drive or a cloud account. Most hardware repairs leave your files alone, but a drive replacement or system reinstall can erase them. If the laptop will not start, tell the repairer, as they may be able to copy your files off first.
Can data recovery get my files back?
Sometimes. Deleted files and drives that fail slowly often give up some or all of their data. A drive that has been physically damaged, overwritten or securely wiped may not. Recovery from a drive with mechanical damage can need specialist equipment. A good repairer will tell you the likely outcome before starting and will not promise results they cannot see yet.
Is it worth repairing an old laptop?
It depends on the fault and the laptop. A new battery, a solid state drive or more memory can give an older laptop years more use. A failed motherboard on an old model is often not worth the cost. Ask the repairer to compare the repair cost with the value of the laptop before you agree.
What should I do with an old laptop battery?
Do not put it in the household bin, where damaged batteries can cause fires. Take it to a household waste recycling centre or a shop battery collection point. When you buy a new electrical item, the shop must offer a way to dispose of the old one it replaces. Ask your repairer whether they will take the old battery away for recycling.
My laptop is swollen or bulging. Is that dangerous?
A swollen battery can push up the keyboard or trackpad, or split the case. Stop using and charging the laptop, keep it away from heat, and do not press on the bulge or try to remove the battery yourself. Mention it in your request so the repairer knows to replace the battery with care.
Do I need to give the repairer my password?
Not always. Many hardware repairs can be tested without signing in. For software problems, the repairer usually needs access. You can create a temporary account for them and remove it afterwards, or change your password once the laptop is back. Never share banking or email passwords, which no repair needs.
