Dog walking

What to expect
from your pro.

Long working days, a new puppy, an injury or a dog with more energy than you have hours. A dog walker means your dog gets out in the middle of the day, has a sniff and a run, and comes home ready to settle. Most walkers collect from your door, walk locally and drop your dog back, with a message or photo to let you know how it went.

On AYS you search with your postcode and see dog walkers who cover your area. You can book a standard walk at a fixed price, or describe what your dog needs and ask for quotes. Tell the walker about recall, how your dog is with other dogs, and anything they pull towards or are scared of. A good walker will want a meet and greet first, so your dog knows them before the first walk.

There is no national licence for dog walking in England. Some councils do limit how many dogs one person can walk in parks and public spaces, and a few ask professional walkers for a permit. A careful walker will know the rules where they walk and keep group sizes small.

Solo walks

One to one walks for dogs who are nervous, reactive, elderly or simply happier without company.

Short home visits to let a young puppy out, give a meal, play gently and keep up toilet training.

Lunchtime walks

A regular walk in the middle of the day, so your dog is not left alone for a full working day.

Home visits for older dogs

A gentle stroll or garden break, medication given as you instruct, and company for a dog who tires easily.

Weekend and holiday cover

Walks booked around days out, hospital appointments or a busy week when your usual routine slips.

Meet and greet

A first visit so the walker can meet your dog, see your home and agree keys, routes and routines.

Pricing

How the price
is worked out

Standard walks can often be booked at a fixed price shown before you pay. For regular schedules, several dogs or dogs with extra needs, you can ask local walkers for a quote. The price depends on the length of the walk, whether it is solo or in a group, how many dogs you have, how often you book, and any extras such as feeding, medication or towel drying after a muddy walk. Quotes are free and there is no obligation.

Before the visit

How to get
ready

  • Book a meet and greet before the first walk so your dog gets to know the walker.
  • Agree how keys will be handed over and where the lead, harness, towels and poo bags are kept.
  • Share your vet's details, any health conditions and how your dog behaves with other dogs and people.
  • Check your dog's collar has a tag with your name and address, as the law requires in public places.
  • Say clearly whether your dog can go off lead, and where they must stay on it.

Choosing the right pro

Every dog walker on AYS passes a photo ID check and a review by our team before they can take bookings. We ask walkers to upload insurance and any animal care or first aid qualifications, and the team checks what they send. As walkers will often hold your keys, a DBS certificate is worth looking for on their profile. Ask about group sizes and how they handle dogs off lead.

FAQs

Dog walking:
your questions.

Something else? Ask us and a person will reply.

Does a dog walker need a licence?

There is no national licence for dog walking in England. Licensing rules cover activities like dog boarding and dog day care, not walks. Some councils use Public Spaces Protection Orders to limit how many dogs one person can walk in their parks, and a few run their own permit schemes for professional walkers. Ask your walker which rules apply where they go.

How many dogs does a walker take at once?

It depends on the walker and the area. Some councils set a limit on how many dogs one person can walk in public spaces, often four or six. Many walkers keep groups smaller than that so they can watch every dog. If your dog prefers its own company, book solo walks instead.

Will my dog be walked off lead?

Only if you agree to it. Tell the walker about your dog's recall and whether they chase wildlife, bikes or other dogs. Many walkers keep a new dog on a lead, or a long line, until they know them well. Some parks and nature areas also have rules that dogs must stay on a lead.

How long is a typical dog walk?

Walkers usually offer a few set lengths, such as a short walk or a longer one, and the time normally counts from collection to drop off. Puppies, older dogs and small breeds may need shorter, gentler walks. Ask what is included, such as travel time, a towel down or a fresh bowl of water.

What happens with my keys?

You agree this with the walker at the meet and greet. Some families hand over a spare key, others use a key safe or leave a key with a neighbour. Your address and phone number are only shared with the walker once the booking is confirmed. If the walker uses a key safe, ask how they keep codes private.

What if I need to cancel a walk?

You can cancel for free up to 24 hours before the walk is due to start. That gives the walker time to fill the slot or rearrange their group. Bookings can be made from 2 hours ahead up to 90 days ahead, so you can plan a regular routine or book a walk at short notice.
