Booking a pro
in Leicester.

Leicester's inner streets are mostly Victorian and Edwardian red brick terraces, in areas such as Highfields, Clarendon Park, Westcotes and Belgrave. The city has two universities, a growing number of residents' parking schemes and a licensing scheme for many rented homes. And every autumn, Belgrave Road lights up for one of the best known Diwali celebrations in the country, with lights, crowds and closed roads.

AYS Concierge is new and opens area by area, so we do not claim to have pros on every Leicester street yet. Enter your LE postcode to see who covers it today. If you are a caterer, cleaner, electrician or mobile pro working in Leicester, you can join now and choose the postcode districts you serve.

Leicester homes, and what they mean for a job

Rows of brick terraces were built across Leicester in the late nineteenth century. In South Highfields, a conservation area, smaller terraces on streets such as Churchill, Connaught and Hamilton Street date from the 1880s, beside larger villas towards London Road. Many of these homes have slate roofs, bay windows, back alleys and solid brick walls rather than cavity walls.

Solid walls behave differently from modern ones. Local heritage groups have raised concerns that badly fitted external insulation can trap damp in Victorian brick, so ask any builder or decorator how they will let the walls breathe. If you live in a conservation area, check with the council before changing windows, doors or the front of the house, and tell your pro when you book.

Good to know

Local things that change how a job is done, or what it costs.

Selective licensing for landlords

Since October 2022, Leicester has run selective licensing for private rented homes in parts of Westcotes, Fosse, Braunstone Park and Rowley Fields, Stoneygate and Saffron. Licence conditions cover gas and electrical safety and smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Check Leicester City Council's website to see whether your property is included.

New residents' parking schemes

Leicester has been adding residents' parking schemes, including around Evington Road, Woodgate and Belgrave. If your street is in one, tell your pro where to park and whether you can give them a visitor permit. The council's parking permits page lists the schemes and how they work.

Diwali on the Golden Mile

Belgrave Road, known as the Golden Mile, hosts the city's Diwali lights switch-on and celebrations each autumn, with road closures and big crowds. If you live nearby, allow for this when booking a van job, and book caterers and beauty pros early for family events.

Hard water

Severn Trent describes much of Leicestershire as a hard water area. Expect limescale in kettles, showers and combi boilers. Its postcode checker shows the hardness for your home, which helps a plumber decide whether a filter or softener makes sense.

Can I book a pro in Leicester on AYS yet?

AYS Concierge is new and opens area by area, so it depends on your postcode. Enter your LE postcode and you will see any pros who already cover it. If none show yet, check back soon, as local pros are joining. Every pro is reviewed by our team and passes a photo ID check before they can take bookings.

Can I book catering for Diwali or a wedding at home?

Yes, where local caterers cover your postcode. Describe the event, the number of guests, the food you want, any dietary needs and whether the caterer will cook on site. Caterers send you a price, and quotes are free with no obligation. Festival dates get busy in Leicester, so request quotes a few weeks ahead.

Is my rented property in Leicester's licensing area?

Leicester's selective licensing covers parts of Westcotes, Fosse, Braunstone Park and Rowley Fields, Stoneygate and Saffron wards. Shared houses fall under separate HMO licensing. The council's website has the maps and conditions. On AYS you can book the electrician, cleaner or Gas Safe engineer you need to meet those conditions.

Should I insulate the outside of my Victorian terrace?

Get advice first. Leicester's Victorian terraces mostly have solid brick walls, which need to let moisture out. Some insulation systems, badly fitted, can trap damp and harm the brickwork. Ask any builder to explain the materials and how they handle damp. In a conservation area, check with the council before changing the outside of the house.
