Booking a pro
in Southampton.
Southampton sits between the Test and the Itchen, two chalk rivers that also supply much of its tap water. Bombing in the Second World War destroyed much of the old centre, so post-war buildings stand beside surviving medieval walls, while Victorian terraces fill Portswood, Shirley, Bevois Valley and the Polygon. With two universities and busy docks, homes and streets here have their own needs.
AYS Concierge is new and opens area by area, so we do not claim to have pros on every Southampton street yet. Enter your SO postcode to see who covers it today. If you are a plumber, cleaner, roofer or mobile pro working in Southampton, you can join now and choose the postcode districts you serve.
Southampton homes, and what they mean for a job
Many Southampton terraces are Victorian, with a front room, back room, small kitchen and rear yard. In Portswood, Highfield and Bevois Valley a lot of them are now shared houses for students at the University of Southampton and Solent University. Expect narrow halls, tight stairs and many bedrooms to clean or check, and tell your pro how many rooms there are.
Most of the medieval town inside the walls is a conservation area, split into Old Town North, West and South, and the walls, the Bargate and many buildings nearby are listed or scheduled. Elsewhere, the post-war rebuild left flat-roofed blocks and plainer housing that bring their own roof and window work. If your home is listed or in a conservation area, say so when you book.
Good to know

Local things that change how a job is done, or what it costs.
Hard water from the chalk
Southern Water says most of its supply comes from chalk, which is high in calcium, and Southampton draws on the Test, the Itchen and chalk groundwater. Expect limescale in kettles, showers and boilers. Southern Water's postcode checker shows the hardness for your home.
Residents' parking zones
Southampton has numbered residents' parking zones, including streets near the universities, and students in private housing need a permit to park in some of them. Tell your pro which zone you are in and whether you can give them a visitor permit. The council's website has a zone map.
The Itchen Bridge toll
The Itchen Bridge, between the city centre and Woolston, is a toll bridge, with lower rates for registered residents and local businesses. If you live on the east side, a pro coming from the centre may cross it. Check the council's website for current tolls and height classes for vans.
Shared houses and licensing
Southampton City Council licenses many houses in multiple occupation, and has consulted on wider licensing covering wards such as Portswood, Bevois, Swaythling and Shirley. Landlords booking end of tenancy cleans or safety checks should check the council's website for what applies to their property today.

Can I book a pro in Southampton on AYS yet?
AYS Concierge is new and opens area by area, so it depends on your postcode. Enter your SO postcode and you will see any pros who already cover it. If none show yet, check back, as local pros are joining. Every pro is reviewed by our team and passes a photo ID check before they can take bookings.
Why is there so much limescale in Southampton?
Southampton's water comes from the Test, the Itchen and chalk groundwater, and chalk adds calcium. Southern Water does not soften it before it reaches your tap. Limescale builds up in kettles, shower heads and boilers, and can shorten their life. A plumber can suggest descaling, filters or a softener, and Southern Water's postcode checker shows your hardness.
I let a student house in Portswood. What should I book?
Between tenancies, landlords often book an end of tenancy clean, small repairs, gardening for the yard, and gas and electrical safety checks. Gas safety checks must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Many shared houses in Southampton need a licence from the council, so check its website for the conditions that apply.
Do I need permission for work in the Old Town?
Most of the medieval town is a conservation area, and many buildings near the walls are listed. Changes to windows, roofs, doors or the front of a listed building usually need consent, while like for like repairs often do not. Check with Southampton City Council's planning team before work starts, and tell your pro about the status.
